Problem Statement

When user starts their PCs, they come across an error called “BOOTMGR is missing“.

However, it ask users to press Ctrl+Alt+Del for restarting system but the problem is still not resolved by doing this.

Cause for BOOTMGR Missing Error

  • BOOTMGR File Deleted: Unintentionally, if the boot file is deleted from system then the error occurs.
  • BOOTMGR File Corrupted: Due to virus in system, if the file gets corrupted or damaged then it will stop functioning and eventually leads to missing error.
  • Hard Disk Connectivity Fails: Since the boot file is located hard disk therefore, if the file does not gets file path (during the time of system boot) then it will display such error.

Techniques to deal with BOOTMGR Missing Error

NOTE: To fix the error users should have Windows (Windows 8.1, Windows8, Windows 7 or Windows Vista) installation disc.


Technique 1: Using StartUp Repair Option as Recovery Tool

NOTE: Before starting the procedure, be sure that you have set CD/DVD drive of your system as primary boot device.

  1. Insert the Windows installation disc and then start your system.
  2. When a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message display, then Press any key from keyboard. This will start loading your Windows file.


  3. After the file has been loaded, an Install Windows window will appear in front of you. In this window, select language, keyboard or input method and time & currency format.


  4. After selection procedure, click on Next button.
  5. Select Repair your Computer option on the window appearing in front of you.


  6. A System Recovery Options window will appear that will search and load all the systems files. Once the searching & loading, is finished click on Next.
  7. Then, select Use Recovery Tool option after selecting your OS (that is to be repaired) and click Next to continue.
  8. From System Recovery options, select Startup Repair option and then click on Restart button.
  9. At the end, click on Finish button to restart your system (If a message is again displayed to press any key, then do not press any key. It will automatically continue further processing).

Technique 2: Rebuilding Boot Configuration Data Storage

  1. Insert the Windows installation disc and then start your system.
  2. When a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message display, then Press any key from keyboard. This will start loading your Windows file.
  3. After the file has been loaded, an Install Windows, window will appear in front of you. In this window, select language, keyboard or input method and time & currency format.
  4. After selection procedure, click on Next button
  5. Select Repair your Computer option on the window appearing in front of you.
  6. A System Recovery Options window will be appeared, which will search and load all the systems files. Once the searching & loading is finished, click on Next.
  7. Then, select Use Recovery Tool option after selecting your OS that is to be repaired and click Next to continue
  8. From System Recovery options, click on Command Prompt option.
  9. Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press ENTER.

Technique 3: Selecting System Restore Option as Recovery Tool

The procedure will restore the system to an earlier point, only if you have enabled the option System Restore of your PCs.

  1. Reboot your system by restarting it.
  2. Insert the Windows installation disc and then start your system.
  3. When a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message display, then Press any key from keyboard. This will start loading your Windows file.
  4. After the file has been loaded, an Install Windows, window will appear in front of you. In this window, select language, keyboard or input method and time & currency format.
  5. After selection procedure, click on Next button
  6. Select Repair your Computer option on the window appearing in front of you.
  7. A System Recovery Options window will be appeared, which will search and load all the systems files. Once the searching & loading, is finished click on Next.
  8. Then, select Use Recovery Tool option along with selecting your OS that is to be repaired and click Next to continue
  9. From System Recovery options, click on System Restore. Go through the instructions of System Restore Wizard and then select the correct Restore point.
  10. Click Finish to restart and restore your system.

Technique 4: Creating A New Boot Block/ Boot Sector

NOTE: This strategy is only applicable for the older versions of Windows.

  1. Reboot your system by restarting it.
  2. Insert the Windows installation disc and then start your system.
  3. When a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD message display, then Press any key from keyboard. This will start loading your Windows file.
  4. 4) After the file has been loaded, an Install Windows, window will appear in front of you. In this window, select language, keyboard or input method and time & currency format.
  5. After selection procedure, click on Next button
  6. Select Repair your Computer option on the window appearing in front of you.
  7. A System Recovery Options window will appear, which will search and load all the systems files. Once the searching & loading, is finished click on Next.
  8. Then, select use Recovery Tool option along with selecting your OS that is to be repaired and click Next to continue.
  9. From System Recovery options, click on Command Prompt.
  10. Type bootrec /fixbr and press Enter.

Conclusion
The first technique i.e. Startup Repair Option is only reliable for fixing the above stated problem. However, if the problem does not solve after applying this technique then go for other options given.
